Course Information

  • This course covers two main topics, probability and statistics, and ordinary differential equations. Each of these topics could easily make up several courses on their own, and we will only be scratching the surface of each topic.
  • Probability and Statistics:
We will begin by discussing the connection between probability and statistics, and why it's important to have a good understanding of probability in order to understand statistics. This section of the course will focus on developing a good understanding of discrete and continuous probability. We will end this section by applying our understanding of probability to conduct formal hypothesis tests on data.
  • Ordinary Differential Equations:
Differential equations are equations that relate changes in a quantity to the quantity itself. These equations are the foundation of modern physics, and are used in almost every aspect of engineering. We will discuss applications of differential equations to wastewater treatment processes, beam physics, and other applications from engineering and physics. One of the main takeaways from this section should be how to find numerical approximations to differential equations when analytical solutions are difficult or impossible to find.
