The seed idea in topology is that of a “topological space”, the data of a set X along with a list of the
subsets of X which we agree to call open subsets.
General Topology is the study of this idea, and the other ideas and theorems which follow from it.
As a subject general topology was developed in the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries;
it is not a topic of current research.
However, this collection of results is vital as a language. All further studies in analysis, probability, and geometry
assume familarity with this language, and use it as the basis for further constructions.
This course is an introduction to the ideas of general topology, as well as an introduction to the fundamental group
and some of its applications. It is intended for students who are interested in analysis (i.e., what calculus develops
into) and geometry.
